Should the UK ban females wearing a burka as France did? 11/4/11

Is this the right way to go?

A law comes into force in France making it an offence for a Muslim woman to conceal her face behind a veil in public.

C.T.
Forcing a woman to refrain from wearing a veil is just as bad as forcing her to wear one. I fear that women in hardline families will be kept at home rather than allowed out without a veil.

The one thing I can never underatand about Islam/muslims, is how can they aspire to emulate their prophet Mohammad, who it is said killed hundreds of people, many of whom were Jews? He also had many wives, including a Jewish slave, and he is alleged to have married Aisha when she was only 6, he used to practice 'thighing' on Aisha, where he would
basically massage his penis inbetween her legs, as she was too young for penetration, when Aisha was 9, they then consumated the marraige.
He was more like a soldier, and nothing like Jesus who spread the word of peace through verbal means and magic tricks, but Mohammad spread the word of Islam by the sword.
So how can muslims think that he was a good guy? And wish to emulate his life?
Any muslims here? I would like to hear their thoughts.

Just for you Karen

Mohammad was according to scripture chosen directly by god to hear his word directly. the quaran is therefore written by god himself. from that muhammad became the most important prophet of allah and jesus is sort of deputy prophet. as for his life that's not too important since its about following the scripture not copying muhammad's life. just as the bible includes many things jesus abhorred. if you believe in that thing of course but as an atheist and a pluralist i strongly recommend the Quaran, its a great book and most will be pleasantly surprised to find its not the hate filled dogma most fear. as far as the veil is concerned i feel for those women who genuinely want to wear it out of a passionate belief in god and i support their right to do so. to resort to a cliche france is using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

Use this one mate if you want. I was on your board last nioght, It was very enjotable :-)

lol - must look after our eight legged friends.
Getting back to the subject - Am I not right in thinking that the French laws are not purely aimed at Muslims though as it would also stop other religions wearing tokens too?

R.S.
F.A.you are full of shit, are you a muslim? I very much doubt you are athiest, trying to pull people into Islam are we. I can see what you're trying to do. I'll stick with real athiesm and I won't lie about it.

L.R.
Nah of course the quran isn't filled with hate..............'

L.R.
Believers, do not make friends with any but your own people....they desire nothing but your ruin....you believe in the entire book................When they meet you they say:'We too are believers', But when alone, they bite their fimngertips with rage. Sura 3:118. 119

L.R.
And I could find many more examples of hate directly preached from Al Qur'an....methinks you lie about being athiest Fraser........

N.H.

I heard on the radio today someone references a cartoon that had appeared in Private Eye.

It was two muslim men discussing the issue and one says to the other

"I don't know what all the fuss is about. If this becomes law she simply won;t be allowed out at all"

Quite amusing at first though I suspect this might be closer to the truth than one thinks for some people!

On the issue of clothing, There is much clothig that offends me. For example. Manchester United tops. I don't see I have the right on this issue to have anything more than an opinion anymore than that of Man Utd tops.

The law seems perfectly adequate and empowers a bus driver, for example, to ask a veil wearing woman to lift her veil for ID purposes or else refuse travel. Similar at the airport.

And also, would it apply to full face motor cycle helmets? I appreciate that you should wear one when you are riding but at some point you stop and get off. Are then, albeit momentarily then breaking the law before you get a chance to remove it???

K.L.M.
They're a safety issue though are they not?

N.H.
How Karen?

J.M.
The qu'ran is a mediaeval instruction manual for conquering other peoples’ countries, and is full of hate filled scriptures.

K.L.M.
A motor cycle helmet protects the rider from skull injury.....

K.L.M.
A burkha is just a way of muslim women hiding their features because they wish to preserve their beauty for their husbands. Which is fine, a long as they aren't forced to do this.

P.s. Liverpool jerseys offend me, lol

K.L.M.
I think so too Jackie, after having read quite a few suras myself. It's totalitarian and there is no democracy in Islam imho.

N.H.
K.L.M.said "A motor cycle helmet protects the rider from skull injury....."

Yes but it is also a full face device that can be worn at other times, for example, walking down the road.

K.L.M.said "A burkha is just a way of muslim women hiding their features because they wish to preserve their beauty for their husbands. Which is fine, a long as they aren't forced to do this."

INDEED!

N.H.
Also, when they've had a bad hair day and/or can't find their foundation cream

K.L.M.
Lololol Nik :) bad hair day, that's everyday for me :(

K.L.M.
Good point Olesegun!! :) this is true

K.L.M.
I don't know if France is doing the correct thing, but I do know that many muslims in Europe are allegedly 'not asimillating' into European life, and tend to segregate themselves from the rest of society, and I think that is a bad thing. It gives a 'them and us'
Impression. :(

N.H.
I've got a beautiful wife who has given me my lovely children. I'm proud of her.

Can't understand a man so insecure they're not afraid to be proud of their wife

T.P.
I guess it depends on if you're religious or not, or if you have sympathies towards religious people. Let's be honest, the burqa is oppressive. Of course, women do choose to wear them, but I would suggest that is only due to their upbringing. If the idea is to reduce oppression of women - on a humanitarian level - then I think this is a good thing and focus shouldn't be on if you'll offend someone or not. You're always going to offend someone. At the end of the day, you'd like to think your government are in a position where they can make decisions without interruption of opinion-ridden-religion. The first point made on this was good, about how forcing to not wear one is similar to forcing them to wear them... This is true. Instead of making a law to try and do what they fear saying they should just come out and say it. It's oppressive. End of.

G.T.
It's so they can play away without anyone noticing if you ask me. Sneaky feckers!!

M.R.
Karen......would you describe yourself as an Islamophobe? Have you no respect for anybody else's opinions and beliefs?

M.R.
Jackie.....ooops...there's a Union Jack.........there's a racist comment? Coincidence?

M.R.
Well, on the basis that the French law is intolerant and is directed at one religious creed......I, for one, as a Christian, think its wrong....

N.H.
Me also and completely unneccesary. We have laws that deal with face coverings already.

Richard Frazer
It is a vote winner for a poorly liked president. It even says that in the story. I think that all people should have to identify themselves in security situations . . . which I think is already the case. I understood that this was a purely secular law where all religious icons could not be worn out but i was wrong. This is purely aimed at one religious tradition! So I am with Mark and Nik on this it is prejudice and will achieve little in a country where so few people wear this sort of costume anyway. A law that allowed the police to identify the individuals if they needed to would surely suffice.

Richard Frazer
As far as I understand the Burka is not written into the Koran (may be wrong) so it is traditional not religious. . . perhaps the definition needs to be found. It is of arabic decent not muslim.
