I.J.
just been listening on Radio 5 to the fantastic work done by the charity Nightstop in helping homeless people across the country. What an inspirational group of people!

That's great! Hope they have the resources to deal with the massive levels of homelessness in the UK.

Anyone who gives up their time to help the homeless is OK in my book. Best wishes to them all..

Democratic Reform Party; some of our memebers are joing an inicitive called "The Big Sleepout" in December - where people will be sleeping in the streets alongside the homeless to highlight the issues of homelessness. See here for more details if you wish to take part - http://www.democraticreform.org.uk/2011/05/30/big-sleep-out/

Though addressing the root causes of homelessness would be by far the best thing to do.

Attack homelessness from all directions. Just getting people aware of it is a feat in itself!

Kathy Johnson
Homelessness in the UK is a much bigger problem than our government let on. In Feb 2009 there was 1.8 million families on the social housing waiting lists over 4.5 million people. I have not got the figures for now but I don’t think it will have gone down. that it has gone down, and the governments system for counting rough sleepers depends on an estimate and is vastly underestimated.

Very left-wing! What I'd love to see instead of hand outs is a look at why people are homeless! Give a man a can of soup he will be full for an hour! Target the causes of poverty and he might live a happy positive life!

Kathy Johnson
If we give people an affordable home they may also live happy lives. Not being able to afford a house of 100,000 + may not be due to poverty. Two people on minimum wage can not get a mortgage that high. although I think the minimum wage is too low, but thats another topic.

The govt's austerity (poverty) measures are only goung to make the issue of homelessness worse. I know of people who have been living in a hostel for over 2 years waiting for a social housing let to become available. I was lucky as I was offered a place after just 2 years, having applied for 42 different properties. I was not homeless but may well have been if I had had to wait much longer, as my housing benefit did not cover my rent and I was getting into debt. I suffered a heart attack and was offered a place a month later.

Having participated in counting homelessness and working in the sector for a while it seems to me the solution lays in changing the attitude of our homes being a commodity not legislation.

I.J.we need to come at this from 2 angles. Firstly dealing with the immidiate problems of the current homeless and secondly trying to take measures to tackle the underlying reasons behind homelessness

D.L.
Hi Ian i think we also need to accept that for some (but not all by any means!) this is a lifestyle choice. For some it's about the legislation around social housing, for others the economic situation of the country but my experience( limited as it was/is) for most it's about being victim to someone else's greed. The largest % of street homeless people i have worked with are casualties of family breakdowns. Some divorcees some young people left with little choice but to run and hide.Politics UK ‎(Ian Jerram) Dawn that's what particularly impressed me about the Nightstop charity. They actually take people into their homes. I don't think homelessness is all about greed it's more about the availability of homes

D.L.
Nightstop do some AMAZING work indeed. The greed i am talking about is the greed that makes a home a commodity as i referred to earlier. Having worked as a homeless officer there are homes available but the greed of others makes them unobtainable for most.
